Telkom threatens interdict against EasyInfo

Telkom has given EasyInfo until today to respond to papers demanding that the company remove its controversial Web directory. Telkom says it will apply for a High Court interdict against EasyInfo tomorrow, if the company does not comply.

The case relates to EasyInfo`s Personal Pages, a white pages directory listing the names, residential addresses and telephone numbers of 2.5 million people. The publication of the directory sparked outrage when it emerged that many people who have unlisted Telkom telephone numbers are included in the database.

EasyInfo MD Alan Lipschitz, who said earlier that he had offered to cooperate with Telkom in removing unlisted subscribers from the database, says EasyInfo has not had much time to respond to the issue, but the company`s management has been in meetings with lawyers all weekend. "We are confident that we will be able to resolve the matter to the satisfaction of all parties," he says.

Telkom says in an official statement that it would apply for a High Court interdict against EasyInfo tomorrow, demanding that it "remove and prevent further publication of Telkom`s personal directory including, among others, names, addresses, phone and fax numbers on the EasyInfo Web site or any Web site which they may publish".

Telkom is expecting EasyInfo to respond by today to papers served on Thursday. Telkom will also ask the Pretoria High Court to order EasyInfo to hand over all copies of customer-confidential information and disclose all third-parties to whom the confidential information has been made available, apart from those who might have accessed it on EasyInfo`s Web site.
