Shell`s GeoStar online mapping and route planning service, first launched in October 2001, has been upgraded to offer users more speed and functionality. The upgrade follows an extensive customer satisfaction survey conducted last year.

Shell reports that thousands of South Africans use the service every month to source route maps and plan their road trips.

"GeoStar`s service providers include Maporama, who provide the location-centric solutions for the detailed roadmaps, and InfoSight, who provide the design and server hosting facilities," says Ebrahim Parker, Shell`s E-Commerce (B2C) manager.

Maporama allows visitors to the site to print their maps and itineraries or receive an e-mail in order to have them at hand when on the move. "Receiving thousands of map hits every month, Shell GeoStar required an extremely robust solution, ensuring a flawless 24/7 quality of service," says Laurent Vermot-Gauchy, Maporama`s CEO.

The upgraded GeoStar site now also offers additional benefits such as entertainment listings en-route as well as places to eat and stay.

"We`ve retained the features that customers find useful, including Map Search, Station Finder and Plan Your Route, only it can now download faster onto your computer," comments Parker.
