SurfControl, the world`s number one Web and e-mail filtering company, has announced the launch of SurfControl E-mail Filter 4.7, a major upgrade that offers enterprises new anti-spam technology to detect the latest HTML-based spam designed to trick filters, offer greater accuracy in identifying spam and more security tools to manage e-mail communications risks efficiently.
"Spam, once a mere nuisance, has now become an epidemic. By the end of the year, nearly half of all e-mails will be spam. And, as spammers become more aggressive, spam that threatens or defrauds e-mail users is rapidly increasing," says Craig Copeland, director of local distributor, Networks Unlimited.
SurfControl estimates that 95 percent of all spam examined by its Global Content Team is HTML-based. The new version of SurfControl E-mail Filter incorporates technology to pull out hidden code within HTML e-mail messages and filters e-mail content against one of the industry`s most accurate and comprehensive databases of spam "fingerprints" created by SurfControl`s Global Content Team.
To combat the latest spam techniques, this version also incorporates a new list of prioritised spam security rules and a spam "misspellings" dictionary to provide companies with stronger defenses against the most frequent and dangerous spam. New spam analysis and e-mail management features have also been added to ease network administration, optimise network security and stop unwanted content in the enterprise.
"SurfControl E-mail Filter includes innovative technology to stay one step ahead of the spammers. The latest enhancements give organisations the world`s best protection against new spam techniques and make e-mail content management much more efficient for network administrators", says Copeland.
Key features of SurfControl E-mail Filter 4.7 include:
New Spam Protection
* HTML Spam Management offers protection against a rapidly growing form of spam. Using various techniques, spammers can hide their identity, track and harvest e-mail addresses, or mask real words and phrases to make e-mails difficult for filters to detect. SurfControl E-mail Filter will now include technology that pulls out hidden HTML code in e-mails and compares content against its anti-spam database for better detection of new spam and defense against the latest techniques.
* A Spam Misspellings Dictionary with more than 400 examples of the most common misspellings of words used by spammers to bypass filtering technology.
Easier Administration and Message Review
* Automated Message Management for isolated messages greatly enhances ease of use by giving administrators the ability to specify the action to be taken for suspected spam e-mails in isolate folders. Administrators can specify whether isolated messages should be automatically released or deleted and the lapsed time required for the action to be taken.
* New Spam Security Rules tested by SurfControl`s Global Content Team offer optimised, top down priority for e-mail risk management and out of the box effectiveness. The new rule set also features nine custom isolate folders for enhanced administration of messages, giving managers the ability to quickly understand and identify why e-mail messages were isolated for review.
* Windows Performance Monitor Integration enables administrators to set alerts and be notified about the performance of SurfControl E-mail Filter with a pop up message at the console for maximum uptime and scalability.
Copeland says the latest version of SurfControl E-mail Filter meets the demands of large enterprises and offers protection against the wide variety of risks inherent in e-mail. "Unlike products that only offer anti-spam features, SurfControl E-mail Filter helps companies control other e-mail risks as well, like inadvertent disclosure of confidential information, viruses, legal liability and overburdened network resources."
Nearly two million enterprise mailboxes worldwide are now filtered with SurfControl E-mail Filter. SurfControl`s e-mail filtering technology combines multiple layers of spam detection and content filtering, including a vast spam signature database to identify and classify spam in real time, artificial intelligence and lexical analysis using Boolean logic. It includes some of the industry`s strongest anti-virus protection, to scan, cleanse and block e-mail borne viruses, by file type and in attachments.
Companies also can assess e-mail content risks in an offline production environment with E-mail Audit to review historical e-mail communication without having to reconfigure current network settings. E-mail Audit provides organisations with insight into exposure to potential risks and can help them develop effective acceptable use policies.
