Bandwidth theft complaints rile Telkom

TelkomInternet has responded to complaints about the abuse of Internet usernames and passwords by claiming it implements checks and balances to ensure credibility.

Spokesman Roshelle Pillay says that while TelkomInternet cannot take responsibility for the subscriber base`s usernames and passwords, it has implemented encrypted passwords that are only available to the technical support centre as part of a drive to protect subscribers.

"In addition, we will soon provide an online password management facility to enable subscribers to change their passwords as often as they please and to provide them with additional security."

According to Telkom, subscribers should put in place the necessary measures to protect themselves against bandwidth theft, such as a personal firewall and anti-virus software.

Pillay says the company provides such software at its Secur-IT shop at www.cybertrademall.co.za, and it will soon implement additional measures to protect subscribers against the unlawful use of their usernames and passwords.

"TelkomInternet cannot lift the cap for any subscribers that complain about username abuse, as it is the responsibility of the customers to protect themselves, and Telkom has no control over the account once the customer has made their purchase," says Pillay.
