ISPA seeks spam remedies

The Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) will host a workshop in May to brainstorm ways in which to assist the fight against spam.

According to Ant Brooks, chairman of ISPA`s regulatory committee, the workshop will focus on possible amendments to existing legislation, in particular the ECT Act, to help combat the growing scourge of spam.

"ISPA has been asked to do this by the Department of Communications, and although it was initially planned as an internal ISPA workshop, we have decided to open it up to a broader audience in the hopes of receiving some valuable contributions from industry players," he says.

"We will not be discussing technical solutions to the problem of spam, but rather looking at regulatory issues only."

Brooks says that workshop participants will be expected to be familiar with the relevant [first] part of the ECT Act and should ideally also be familiar with legal approaches to spam and spamming taken in other regions of the world, especially the European Union.

The workshops will be held concurrently in Cape Town and Johannesburg, on 3 May between 10am and 1pm.

The venues will be the UUNet offices at 113 Bowling Avenue in Gallo Manor, Johannesburg, and 240 Main Road in Rondebosch, Cape Town.

Interested parties should RSVP to ISPA`s Elaine Zinn as soon as possible, as space will be limited.
