As part of the annual Heritage Day celebrations tomorrow, communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri will launch a Web site that will be used to store the documented history of Kroonstad.

The launch coincides with the commemoration of 150 years of settlers in the region.

According to the minister, the historical content of the Web site will include information gathered by word of mouth from senior citizens, as well as photographs, letters and newspaper articles from the community.

In addition to providing the missing link in the already documented history of the area, the content will give young people a perspective of who they are and where they come from, she says.

Matsepe-Casaburri will also launch the second phase of the Sediba language portal tomorrow. A joint project between the Department of Communications and the National Electronic Media Institute of SA, the portal stores Web sites for each indigenous language.

Each site contains historical and cultural information about indigenous people in their own languages. This includes religion, food, music, clothes, folklore, wars and community structures.

The sites also contain guidelines for the everyday needs of the people in their own languages, covering issues such as health, life skills and how to start a small business. There is an English version of each language site, so that people may easily learn about other indigenous groups` traditions and norms.

National, provincial and local government representatives are expected to attend the event, which starts at 9.30am at Mahabane Square, Kroonstad.
