FNB online banking crashes

Customers of First National Bank`s (FNB`s) online banking portal experienced problems yesterday when the service was unavailable for most of the business day.

"It went down at about 9:50am, and we were able to bring it up again from time to time," says FNB Online CEO Chris Kotze.

However, the service was intermittent, crashing soon after every revival, due to an error that FNB had not yet identified.

"We were battling to keep it up, because of the backlog of traffic," he says.

Kotze says the service was back live and stable again by 2.30pm yesterday.

People have been forced to either postpone their transactions, or to use alternate methods, he notes, adding it is hard to determine the lost business to FNB.

"We expect our normal peak period of the 28th of an old month to the fourth of the new one will be extended a little because of this problem."
