Deutsche Telekom may extend Internet TV

Deutsche Telekom is mulling extending its Internet TV offering - currently only available via its new, super-fast VDSL broadband connection - to customers with slower connections in an attempt to boost revenues.

"We are considering it," a spokesman for the company's Internet unit T-Online said after the Financial Times Deutschland daily said the company had won only 25 000 customers for its T-Home package since its launch in October.

The spokesman declined to comment on how many customers Deutsche Telekom had for T-Home, which combines voice telephony, Internet access and Internet TV at prices lower than buying the services individually.

Deutsche Telekom, which recently ousted its chief executive, is struggling to find innovative products to compensate for dwindling revenues from traditional fixed-line phone calls.

The company's VDSL network, in which it is investing three billion euros ($3.9 billion), was available in 10 German cities by the end of 2006. Eventually, the company aims to connect 50 German cities.

Unlike slower DSL connections, VDSL has enough capacity for live streaming of high-definition television, and makes it easier to use multiple connections at the same time, for example surfing the Net while watching a film.
