Power outage causes ADSL collapse

A power outage yesterday afternoon, at a Sentech switch in Johannesburg, caused widespread ADSL problems in Gauteng.

Internet Solutions' marketing executive, Anthony Southgate, says the power outage occurred between 3pm and 5pm on one of Sentech's main routers.

"It caused us to lose half the bandwidth on the Rosebank to Radiokop 155MBps line," explains Southgate. Internet access for Internet Solutions' customers was severely restricted as people had to "share" bandwidth.

Pranill Ramchander, Sentech's portfolio manager for corporate communications, confirms "there was a power failure at the Rosebank building housing Sentech's main switch".

"We're still investigating what the problem was," he adds.

Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that another problem hit the online community yesterday, when the .za DSLAM failed. This is the mechanism through which Telkom's central locations link to customer DSL connections.

Telkom could not immediately be reached for confirmation or comment this morning.
