Last month, Trojans were once again the most active type of malicious code, according to the Panda ActiveScan online anti-virus survey.

They were responsible for 25.94% of infections, according to a press release, and adware (software designed to display advertising on computers) was responsible for 23.39% of infections.

"This data confirms the trend among malware creators to use malicious code for financial gain. Both Trojans and adware are particularly useful in this sense," says Jeremy Matthews, CE of Panda Security SA.

Worms were in third place (8.39%), followed by backdoor Trojans (3.77%), spyware (3.2%), diallers (3.02%) and bots (2.48%).

The Panda ActiveScan malware top 10 for September is:

1. Downloader.MDW Trojan
2. W32/IRCbot.BEP.worm
3. Downloader.OZB.
4. ZLFake.A.drp
5. Lineage.BZE Trojan
6. Trojan Downloader.PYI
7. Puce.E
8. Brontok.H.
9. ZlFake.A
10. Downloader.PCQ
