Text messaging tracks teen

A Wheatland teenager, who left town with a 37-year-old man she met over the Internet, is back safe with her family after authorities used text messaging technology to track her movements, says News 10.

Police learned that the girl, who has diminished mental capacity, might try to contact a male friend. Wheatland police chief Dan Boon said they enlisted the help of that friend and after several text messages the missing girl began asking him to come get her.

Officers working with the cellphone company were able to start zeroing in on the location of the girl.

Emergency SMS concerns

According to CJAD, universities are asking students to sign up for text message alerts in case of emergencies, but there are some concerns with the system.

For one thing, it's voluntary and students don't appear to be registering and the text message system has not been tested.

During the shooting at Dawson College in 2006, terrified students and parents crashed the cellphone networks because of the sheer volume of calls and messages.
