Minister of education Naledi Pandor has officially re-launched the Thutong education portal.

First established in 2005, the portal is run by the national Department of Education as an online research tool for schoolteachers.

The portal has four platforms - curriculum, teacher developments, educational management and administration - a development Pandor has welcomed.

"For the curriculum, this is extremely exciting. These spaces provide access to resources in the public domain and conversations in a protected domain."

Pandor stressed the portal offers teachers distinct advantages over simply surfing the Internet.

"The difference between a portal and searching for resources on the worldwide Web is that, on the portal, resources are specifically selected and carefully catalogued or tagged against topics in our curriculum."

The minister adds that the site's re-launch aims to tap into new developments in technology.

The Web 2.0-inspired developments on the portal include blogs on difficult sections of the syllabus, and discussions on classroom management and assessment techniques.
