Nokia backs away from VOIP

Nokia handsets have built-in VOIP capabilities, but that appears to be changing as new N-series handsets are no longer VOIP-compatible, says BroadBand.

Truphone, Gizmo and Fring are three VOIP services that have become strong due in large part to their use on Nokia phones. They now have to make moves of their own to ensure that existing customers will still be able to get some functionality from their service on Nokia phones.

As a result, Truphone is implementing a 'replacement client' functionality and Fring is working with Nokia to make the application available through the Nokia download service.

Nortel buys DiamondWare

In a move designed to enhance its multimedia, voice conferencing and VOIP solutions, Nortel has acquired DiamondWare, a pioneer in high-definition, proximity-based 3D positional voice technology, states TMCnet.

The Canadian-based telecoms giant bought DiamondWare for approximately $7 million in cash, plus up to an additional $3 million to DiamondWare security holders based on achievement of future business milestones during the next 40 months.

Under terms of the agreement, Nortel will acquire all of the outstanding shares of DiamondWare.

Tpad unveils business VOIP solutions

Tpad, a global VOIP service provider, today announced it has released the first of the company's new advanced IP-based PBX services, which have been custom designed specifically for SME type businesses, reports The Open Press.

Tpad's Hosted IP PBX service, called Tpad Lite, offers flexibility and efficiency of next-generation IP solutions without the huge associated costs of infrastructure and network management.

Its newest solution is a fully managed service that connects company head offices, remote offices and home staff, while providing features, flexibility and functionality traditionally available only to large corporate businesses.
