Hackers have planted malicious code on about 10 000 servers in a massive cyber-attack, Internet security company Kaspersky Lab has warned.

Aleks Gostev, head of global research and analysis team for Kaspersky says the firm has estimated, in the last two days alone, between 2 000 and 10 000 servers, mainly in Western Europe and the US, have been hacked. He says the company is not yet sure who the culprits are.

The hackers are attacking exposed Web accounts or using what is called an SQL injection attack, he says. Attackers trick the Web site's software into inadvertently running malicious commands.

Gostev says earlier in the year, a similar attack compromised over 1.5 million Web pages. "Things are still developing, and the similar nature of the malicious programs used in both attacks leads us to think this new wave of attacks is potentially pretty serious."
