T-Systems has been awarded a contract to migrate Sanlam, the second largest life insurer and asset manager in SA, from a shared Token Ring LAN to switched Ethernet, in a deal valued at R58.9 million.

"The programme will ensure that Sanlam is converted from its current Token Ring technology by providing a futuristic, risk-eliminating switched Ethernet architecture that will be an enabler to Sanlam`s business aspirations," says Heinie Witte, business manager for telecommunications at T-Systems.

"By replacing the current limiting technologies, we have been able to negate risks associated with aging technology and insufficient architectures."

With the new network in place, Sanlam plans to take advantage of the many video and voice applications possible with Ethernet-based systems, says Francois Venter, head of Business Solutions, Sanlam.

"T-Systems were the obvious choice as they are currently contracted as the network supplier to Sanlam," he adds.

The new solution, which is to be rolled out countrywide, is based on Cisco`s hardware and network management systems.
