CA delivers industry`s first virus protection solution for Microsoft Windows XP embedded with eTrust Antivirus

Also announces plans to support Windows XP embedded with Service Pack 2

Johannesburg, 07 Oct 2004

Computer Associates International, Inc (NYSE: CA) today announced general availability of eTrust Antivirus for Microsoft Windows XP Embedded - the industry`s first virus protection solution designed specifically for Microsoft`s componentised version of the Windows XP operating system.

CA also announced that eTrust Antivirus will support Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 2 (SP2) upon its general availability. Microsoft today announced the availability of a free Technology Preview for Windows XP Embedded with SP2 for download and testing.

Available as a Software Development Kit (SDK), eTrust Antivirus for Windows XP Embedded provides device designers, manufacturers, distributors and integrators with maximum protection against viruses and a variety of other network-based threats. It also provides essential updates of virus signatures for ongoing security.

"The modular design of CA`s eTrust Antivirus complements the design of Windows XP Embedded, giving device manufacturers the flexibility to decide which components to deploy and which to exclude based on the specific functional requirements of the device," said Scott Horn, senior director, mobile and embedded devices division at Microsoft. "CA`s eTrust Antivirus technology will be fully compatible with Windows XP Embedded with SP2 offering our mutual enterprise customers increased security and greater manageability of devices across their networks."

Microsoft Windows XP Embedded enables developers to produce advanced embedded devices - including point-of-service kiosks, medical systems and thin-clients. These devices are susceptible to many of the same viruses, worms and Trojans that afflict traditional computer systems. As more and more devices are connected to networks and the Internet directly, device makers must provide effective protection from Internet-borne malware.

eTrust Antivirus for Microsoft XP Embedded addresses this growing trend and, with a minimal footprint starting at under 6MB, is ideally designed for Microsoft XP Embedded-based devices that typically have limited spare memory. Developers can decide which modules and options to deploy based on the device design and application. eTrust Antivirus integrates directly with Microsoft Windows Embedded Studio to enable system builders and developers to leverage development tools and anti-virus modules to create custom, security-enhanced Windows XP Embedded operating system images based on the hardware and software requirements of an embedded system design.

Management of security policies, such as update frequencies and alerting, is performed from the eTrust Antivirus Admin console. This allows security for Microsoft XP Embedded devices to be administered in a common manner with other enterprise resources. Administration can be performed on an outsourced basis by the device manufacturer or a third-party security services provider.

"As embedded devices become part of the enterprise computing landscape, best practices security for those devices is becoming essential to protect the enterprise as a whole," said Toby Weiss, senior vice-president of eTrust security management at CA. "CA is working closely with Microsoft to try to ensure that customers can embrace the next generation of XP Embedded solutions while minimising risk and maximising performance."

CA is showcasing eTrust Antivirus for Microsoft Windows XP Embedded at the Microsoft pavilion at the Citrix iForum Global 2004 conference, 4 to 7 October, in Orlando, Florida. Additional information is available at http://ca.com/etrust.
