The SA Receiver of Revenue's office has issued a call for proposals for the provision of a five-year open source office solution.

In an advertisement published in weekend newspapers, SARS calls for submissions from open source solution providers for end-to-end enterprise-level Linux system software.

SARS has embarked on several new technology-driven initiatives in recent months, in line with its goal to transform its operations by 2010.

The use of open source software appears to be aimed at ensuring supplier independence, portability across platforms and customisation opportunities.

The closing date for proposal submissions is 18 March

SARS spokesmen were not available for comment at the time of publication.
