Longhorn server code released

Microsoft has privately released the build for both the Windows Vista client and for the Longhorn Server to testers.

At the end of last year a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that participants in the Longhorn private beta programme had received an updated build of Longhorn Server code as part of the Windows Vista Community Technology Preview.

"The goal of this private release is to continue gathering feedback from private beta programme participants, including hardware vendors, system builders, software vendors, developers and technology adoption programme customers," she said.

Zope to use Twisted Web servers

OSS developers Zope have replaced one of their core components in the latest version of the open source application server with a Web server from the Twisted framework.

The application server, produced by Zope in 1998, is primarily used for building content management systems, and is the base of Plone, Silva and Nuexo CPS systems, among others.

"Twisted, a widely-used networking framework written in Python, supports a large number of protocols and makes it easier for developers to add networking functionality to programs," writes Ingrid Manson for technology site UK.Builder.Com, adding that this should bring Zope potential performance and scalability benefits.

Target adopts Windows servers

Target, the second-largest discount general merchandise retailer in the US, will migrate its systems within each of its 1 400 stores to the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005, according to a MS company statement.

"Microsoft technology can help us drive down costs through a simplified architecture and easier-to-use development tools," says Target CIO, Janet Schalk.
