Marshal broadens range with security appliance

Johannesburg, 04 Jul 2007

Secure e-mail and Internet gateway security provider Marshal has broadened its security offerings with the announcement of a new-generation security appliance based on its MailMarshal SMTP software.

The security appliance forms part of the roll-out of Marshal's Multi-Platform strategy, and follows the launch of MailMarshal Service Provider Edition, which allows customers to benefit from a hosted e-mail security service through service providers.

"The security appliance is built on the same platform and policy engine as the MailMarshal SMTP software and provides identical functionality, flexibility and performance inherent in the SMTP software," says Riaan Otto, GM of 10Net ICT Solutions, which distributes Marshal in South Africa.

"It's highly-scalable and suitable for a range of businesses from small to very large enterprises."

Marshal's security appliance, MailMarshal EIOOOO, offers the best of both worlds: the security and ease of administration of an appliance combined with the flexibility and functionality of a software solution. In addition, Marshal's array management technology permits system administrators to manage a large number of appliances across multiple locations from one central point.

The product provides content protection and defence against malware, making it ideal for companies that prefer the convenience of appliance hardware but require comprehensive content security at the gateway perimeter.

More than just a point solution, the Marshal security appliance provides deep content inspection as well as protection against security threats, including: spam, phishing, viruses, spyware, fraud, porn, DHA, DOS, regulatory non-compliance and intellectual property theft.

Ed Macnair, CEO of Marshal, says: "This year will see us rolling out more new platforms to leverage our proven 10-year-old software security products, including managed security services at the Internet level, followed by a Web security appliance in the next 12 months. We believe the Marshal security appliance represents a new generation of security appliances, because it combines the most scalable and easy to manage software on the market today: MailMarshal SMTP with the convenience of a plug-and-play appliance.

"It's the equivalent of buying a software product at Amazon and ticking the box for special gift-wrap delivery."

Each MailMarshal EIOOOO is a hardened e-mail processing platform that supports load balancing out-of-the-box and is also pre-configured with an integrated anti-virus scanner. Using Marshal's Array Manager, new appliances can be added and auto-configured from the central console quickly and easily.

MailMarshal EIOOOO is based on a Pentium 4 CPU with redundant hard drives, a Marshal MTA and a hardened operating system. The Marshal Array manager software requires: OS - Windows 2000/XP/2003; Database - MSDE 2000 SP3a or later, SQL 2005 Express, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP3a or later or SQL Server 2005; and ASP .NET 1.1.
