Open source PM released

On-demand software provider Projity announced the public beta of OpenProj, open source desktop project management software, reports pr-gb.com.

"OpenProj is an exciting addition to the range of professional desktop applications that are available on the free software desktop today. It's increasingly possible to run your business on an entirely open Linux platform with full compatibility across free software applications and your legacy documents," said Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu CEO.

OpenProj builds on Projity's SaaS release, Project-ON-Demand, and can reportedly migrate from Microsoft Project.

PM, analysis go hand-in-hand

More organisations are integrating business analysis into their project management practices, reports Projects @ Work.

The business analyst role is receiving increased attention in project-driven organisations and more companies are defining specific positions for business analysis. A recent survey of 2 000 industry professionals found the business analysis role falls under a number of job titles: 49% hold the title of business analyst, 28% are project managers and the balance are either systems engineers or solutions architects.

More organisations are finding that their projects are most successful when the project manager and business analyst are operating in lockstep.

Primavera upgrades PM offering

Portfolio and project management software provider Primavera unveiled new versions of both its flagship portfolio management suite and its recently-acquired Pertmaster project risk management toolset, reports VNUNet.

Primavera 6.0 (P6) features a new user interface, enhanced analytics and what-if modelling capabilities for working out how to help managers optimise allocation of resources across different projects and improved integration between SAP apps and Primavera's own Pertmaster suite.

Richard Faris, co-founder of Primavera, said the updated version also boasted new Web-based capabilities designed to make the suite's functionality accessible across the enterprise and make it easier for executives to gain visibility over project status.
