Results of ITWeb's annual BI Survey were unveiled at ITWeb's BI conference, in Bryanston this week, and showed South Africans are on average pleased with their BI roll-out results.

"South African users are generally happy with their BI implementations," said Mariette du Plessis, ITWeb Event's programme director.

Results further showed that 37% of respondents said their goals were fully met, 43% said they were partially met, while only 4% felt their original goals were hardly met.

Furthermore, 59% of respondents believe local representation to be an important factor when purchasing software, while an additional 25% believe it to be "somewhat important".

Fifty-four percent of respondents believed vendor support to be generally acceptable, 31% thought it to be "excellent - accurate and timely", while only 1% thought it unacceptably bad, and 4% technically poor. The remaining 11% felt vendor support was technically good, but slow.

The bad

When asked to identify key challenges or problems that could occur in the implementation of BI, most respondents (29.5%) showed doubt in the solution's ability to handle complex queries.

A further 25.9% feared poor data quality, and 19.4% of respondents worried that users would lack the necessary skills to use the platform successfully.

In reality, approximately 25% of respondents said they experienced no significant problems, while poor data quality accounted for approximately 22% of problems, lack of skills was experienced by about 18% of respondents, and company politics were experienced at about 14% of participating companies.
