Happy birthday Novell ZENworks

Versions 1.0 to 10.0 span the past 10 years since 1998 and are a great indicator of how systems management has developed over the years

Johannesburg, 05 Jun 2008

Novell's systems management solution line, ZENworks, is 10 years old this year. Novell ZENworks 1.0 was launched in 1998; since then its functionality has been consistently expanded to create a complete software suite.

ZENworks enables companies to manage the entire lifecycle of each of its servers, desktop PCs, laptops and handheld devices. The program's name says it all: Zero Effort Networks - effortless administration in the IT environment.

Over the years, ZENworks has established itself as one of Novell's strategic product lines. It comes with a range of components, including asset management, desktop management, handheld management, Linux management and patch management.

The addition of endpoint security management to the Novell ZENworks solutions portfolio early this year offers companies yet another strategically important component to choose from. It not only enables clients to protect confidential company data from hackers or malware attacks, it also means that lost or stolen laptops and other mobile devices are no longer a security issue. This in turn ensures companies can fulfil all compliance and internal security requirements.

Novell ZENworks configuration management, available since the end of 2007, broke new ground in the field of integrated directory services by introducing a new three-tier architecture that is not directory-based. Novell ZENworks configuration management can run on a number of different operating systems, including Windows, Linux and the Novell Open Enterprise Server, meaning that it can be implemented across a range of platforms. Additionally, the solution can manage several different desktop operating systems and Windows versions. Imaging functions and user profile migration wizards maintain personalised desktop and application settings, making it easier to migrate to Vista. Novell ZENworks configuration management offers companies the crucial data and support they need to fulfil compliance guidelines, carry out asset and licence auditing, guarantee business continuity and improve their processes.

Michelle Beetar, Novell SA country manager, says: "The way that ZENworks has developed over the past 10 years indicates how we have consistently strived to improve our products. We have been keeping our finger on the market pulse, so we are in a position to offer solutions tailored to fit our clients' individual needs. We team up with our long-standing partners to offer the best possible solutions for heterogeneous IT environments and consequently respond to the real-world requirements facing companies."

Novell partners are firm believers in the advantages that Novell ZENworks has to offer, with one describing ZENworks as a Swiss Army knife for network administrators as it is compatible with both Linux and Windows operating systems. There are currently more than 40 million Novell ZENworks users worldwide.
