Seagate releases storage server

Seagate BlackArmor NAS 440 is a Johnny-come-lately to the NAS market, but Seagate seems to have done its homework, reports Computerworld.

Aimed at small businesses with 50 or less employees, this Linux-based appliance is full-featured and flexible, with the promise of further extensibility via freeware and open source widgets in the near future.

Unlike a great number of NAS offerings on the market, the Seagate BlackArmor NAS 440 is more than just a small Linux box with Web admin slapped onto it.

Vbootkit 2.0 goes open

The Vbootkit 2.0 attack tool capable of compromising Windows 7 has gone open source, reports Softpedia.

Security researchers Vipin Kumar and Nitin Kumar have released the source code of Vbootkit 2.0 under a GPL licence.

The tool was demonstrated at the Hack-in-the-Box conference in Dubai, where the duo managed to take over the 64-bit flavour of Windows 7 via boot sectors.

Open source PBXs on the rise

Along with VOIP, hosted IP-PBX solutions and mobility, open source PBXs, with their cost-savings potential and flexibility, are emerging as clear winners in this down economy, as businesses look to communications technology to reduce expenses and boost production, according to TMCnet.

One recent study found that open source now accounts for a larger slice of the PBX market than any single manufacturer, and 8% more than Nortel, the long-time leading vendor that's now facing a likely break-up.

That rising market share now represents 40% growth of open source PBXs in the last year alone, as traditional telephone system makers now compete for a bigger slice of a shrinking market, often without knowing it, experts say.
