Jumping Bean, an open source solution provider based in Johannesburg, has released the latest version of Open Bill, an open source invoicing and contract management application.

The company said in a statement that the release of the version was initially focused on fixing bugs in the software and enhancing the user interface. It then decided to introduce features such as the ability to add variable selling price line items to contracts and send customer credit notes via e-mail.

According to Jumping Bean, Open Bill started as a billing and contract tracking application developed in-house for Cyber Connect, a local mobile broadband service provider.

Last year, Jumping Bean decided to release the software as open source as a way of giving back to the community, says Mark Clarke, lead developer of Open Bill, who adds that the project is now hosted on Java.net.

Clarke says: “Now that the release is out the door we will be upgrading all our customers to the new version and encourage any other users of the application to do so as well.”

The application is written in Java and makes use of open source libraries and frameworks to provide an enterprise-level billing and contract management application solution.
