Around 120 000 students will have immediate access to their matric supplementary exam results this month, with the SABC's launch of a "supp results service" as part of its Newsbreak offering.

The service, launched in partnership with Vodacom, Marketel, Phambili Information Technologies and Nedcor, will allow students to call for their results or receive them via SMS.

The results will be made available on the same day as the Department of Education releases them. Results will be released over the next few weeks, with the last set of results due on 9 May.

Technical college results will also be available on the results service between April and August.

Newsbreak also offers breaking news, sports news, weather updates, financial indicators and end-of-year matric results. The SABC reports that hundreds of thousands of callers made use of the results service at the end of last year.

Speaking at the launch of the latest offering in Johannesburg yesterday, Judy Sandison, SABC editor of special news services, said cellular technology permeated even the most isolated areas where no landlines are available. She said people in these areas are increasingly using mobile phones to access information, rather than just to talk.

"There has been massive growth in prepaid mobile technology," Sandison said. "It's no longer just an elitist tool, but rather something that almost everyone can access."

The SABC says it sees the new offerings as part of its strategy to give consumers more choices as to what media platforms they want to use to access information, wherever they are and whenever they want it.

To call for their results, students call Newsbreak on 082-152, select the results option, enter their ID and exam numbers. The results are then read to them.

Students can also pre-register by dialling Newsbreak to have their results sent to them by SMS as soon as they are released.
