African VOIP to be discussed

The recent deregulation of the telecoms industries in several African nations, notably SA and Kenya, will likely lead to the widespread implementation of voice over IP (VOIP) technology across the continent.

In order to provide a structure for the regular exchange of information among players in this specialised field, one of the key aims of the forthcoming African VOIP Forum is to establish an African VOIP Association.

The African VOIP Forum is due to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, on 14 and 15 December and will be hosted by event organiser AITEC.

According to Sean Moroney, group chairman of AITEC, the continent`s first VOIP Forum will be aimed at corporate users, Internet service providers, operators, regulators, policy-makers, technology suppliers and service providers.

"The forum will provide a space for players to review recent developments, learn from best practices around the world, and map out future corporate, national and continental strategies," says Moroney.

"Those countries still debating the pros and cons of VOIP and trying to protect the vested interests of incumbent operators are going to be left behind as more progressive markets reduce costs and multiply connections through the rapid deployment of IP-based solutions."

He says that by sharing knowledge, experience and ideas from throughout the continent and internationally, the pace of VOIP roll-out can be accelerated, mistakes avoided and service excellence achieved.

AITEC is seeking proposals from interested parties for presentations on various topics pertaining to VOIP, to be given at the event, and interested parties can send proposals to seanm@aitecafrica.com, with the deadline of 1 November.
