Mobile operator MTN has announced a strategic partnership with Ericsson, which will become its partner of choice for its third-generation (3G) network.
Following all the recent hype surrounding the provision of 3G services, with rival operator Vodacom claiming it will offer 3G by the middle of this month, MTN has said it will begin its 3G roll-out in the first quarter of 2005.
MTN plans to leverage on Ericsson`s presence in 3G networks to provide its customers with content, applications and services from the global arena.
The company says 3G will, in particular, be beneficial to customers wishing to use applications requiring high bandwidth, such as video telephony, mobile music and TV, as well as wireless broadband Internet access.
"MTN will bring a new generation of services to the market to ensure its end-users a state of the art 3G experience," says Dr Yvonne Muthien, group executive of corporate affairs.
