Mobile operator Cell C has doubled its network traffic over the crucial periods of Christmas and New Year`s Eve, compared with last year`s festive season.

According to a statement, Cell C successfully delivered some 10 million SMSes over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 2004, compared to about four million at the same time in 2003.

The company delivered a further nine million SMSes over the period 31 December 2004 and 1 January 2005, substantially up from the 5.5 million delivered over the corresponding period a year ago.

"All our platforms were monitored over this crucial time to ensure uninterrupted service throughout the peak hours of the New Year period," says Cell C`s media relations manager, Happy Zondi.

She says the organisation had support engineers run a predefined set of checks on each monitored system, reporting on the current status of each on an hourly basis, to be certain that messages would be delivered smoothly.

"Despite the network congestion that is prevalent over these periods, our network ran efficiently and we were able to maintain our service levels," says Zondi.
