As part of its ongoing efforts to expand its reach outside of Africa, MTN International officially opened an office in Iran on Tuesday.

Based in the capital Tehran, the economic hub of Iran, the operation will be led by Chris Kilowan, former CEO of Orbicom, one of the MTN Group`s subsidiaries.

He says opening this new office will position MTN to identify value-enhancing expansion opportunities in line with the group`s vision, which is to be a leader in telecommunications in developing markets.

"We are honoured and pleased to have established an office in Iran and this move is indicative of MTN`s commitment to do business both in this country and its overall confidence in this market," says Kilowan.

The company already has operations in six African nations - Cameroon, Nigeria, Rwanda, SA, Swaziland and Uganda - with over 13 million subscribers across these networks.

Kilowan says MTN has already participated in key telecommunications events in Iran, including the 2004 Telecommunications Exhibition in Tehran.

The company is also celebrating another milestone in 2005, which is a decade of listing on the JSE Securities Exchange, with the resultant financial resources to allow it to continue investing in new technologies and new markets, such as Iran.
