Telkom video technology beams British futurist live at Futurex conference

Johannesburg, 13 May 2005

A top British futurologist will waltz into the main auditorium at the Futurex 2005 conference in Sandton next Thursday from London through a video conferencing link powered by Telkom`s ISDN technology.

British Telecom (BT) chief futurologist Ian Pearson`s schedule did not allow him to travel to SA to attend the conference, starting next Wednesday.

But that has not prevented him from delivering his keynote address at the premier information and communications technology (ICT) forum through a live video transmission from London.

BT is renowned as a world leader in telecommunication technology innovation, and few - if any - have a better insight into future uses of technologies and applications than Pearson.

Whether discussing IPv6 underpinning developments like home automation and peer-to-peer file distribution networks; ultra-simple computing; smart environments; conscious computing; the new texting revolution of high volume SMS messaging; mobility and security in the digital networked economy; ambient intelligence technology; or using broadband as a tool for social innovation; Pearson has a wide ranging knowledge of the time.

Video conferencing is one of most important business developments in today`s competitive environment. It enables one to attend a meeting anywhere in the world, share information and collaborate simultaneously with other participants across the globe without having to leave the office.

This is exactly what Telkom`s video conferencing technology will do, beaming Pearson to Futurex 2005 conference delegates who will benefit from his insightful thoughts about what technological developments to expect in the future, and where they are likely to come from.

Video conferencing improves communications within and between organisations, with meetings over long distances held more often and arranged at very short notice. It also saves money and time in travel requirements, and reduces the associated stress and physical risks.

The facility is also known to improve the effectiveness of meetings as people tend to deviate less from the subjects of discussion. Multi-conferencing is another important service from Telkom, enabling one to have a video conference with more than two sites, and automatically switch the video picture according to the active speaker in the conference. This creates the feeling that all parties are at the same venue.

The video conference link between BT and Futurex uses three basic rates of ISDN lines, providing 384Kbps bandwidth and excellent audio and picture quality with added features like PowerPoint presentation and videos.
