Psion Teklogix workshops: All you need to know about voice technology

Johannesburg, 17 May 2005

Psion Teklogix is hosting workshops in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town to introduce and demonstrate voice technology, the company`s groundbreaking, multilingual voice-directed system from Vocollect.

The Gauteng workshops will take place at the Castle in Kyalami on 24 May, the popular V&A at Cape Town`s Waterfront will be the venue for Capetonians on 26 May and the Durban workshop will be hosted at the Elangeni on 27 May.

Psion Teklogix`s multilingual voice-directed systems are the technology revolution for picking demands in the retail and other industries where productivity and accuracy is not an option. Used extensively for order preparation, picking, receiving, quality control, data collection, etc, this stable "eyes and hands-free" reference voice terminal delivers high performance, reliable retail solutions equally, whether in freezer or hot, humid environments.

Voice-directed systems use speech recognition and synthesis to translate data from the host computer into spoken directions, which are then translated into data for the host. Transmissions are sent via a radio frequency network that connects the host computer to a terminal fitted to a worker`s belt; a headset enables the worker to hear instructions and to literally talk back to the system. This communications process is repeated each time a worker and the host computer exchange information. Psion Teklogix`s voice directed systems are easy to use and the real-time working dialogue between the system and the worker eliminates manual data entry, to boost accuracy, performance and production. Voice systems offer hands-free, eyes-free operation removing the need for workers to read computer screens, handheld displays or printouts, or utilise other devices. In addition, the vocal interaction with the system eliminates lists and labels as well as errors associated with manual systems and increases accuracy by up to 99.99%. By improving accuracy, an average-sized warehouse can realise return on investment of six to 12 months.

The BlueStreak recogniser expertly filters out background and intermittent noises and allows workers to speak naturally, with pauses/interruptions, and to understand rapidly spoken strings of digits.

BlueStreak recognises individual speech patterns and different languages, for diverse work forces. The hardware is specifically designed to stand up to extreme conditions with tens of thousands of Talkman terminals currently utilised in cold storage and freezer rooms, as well as in hot, humid environments. The sealed-case design and rugged housing enable the terminals to withstand rough handling, including drops onto concrete with a breakaway headset adding to worker safety.

Voice systems reduce training time by up to 50% when compared to paper-based systems and allow companies to enhance their performance and to expand without employing additional staff. Increased speed and accuracy result in lower operating costs and productivity is increased by more than 15%.

Psion Teklogix`s voice technology from Vocollect is well suited to wide-ranging industrial environments. Vocollect was established in 1987, has been dedicated to voice technology research over the years and is regarded as one of the most experienced industrial-application voice companies in the world.
