The Portfolio Committee on Communications will tomorrow draw up a shortlist of candidates to fill a vacancy on the council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).

There are 31 nominees for the position, which needs to be filled as the tenure of the chairman, Mandla Langa, is due to expire on 30 June.

According to a spokesman at the regulator, the Portfolio Committee will draw up a shortlist of qualified candidates from the 31 nominees, and interviews will then be conducted with those who make it onto the list.

She says that upon completion of the interviews, the committee will present its findings to the National Assembly for recommendation to the president, and it is hoped that an announcement regarding who the new councillor is can be made by 3 June.

Among other things, the new councillor is expected to be committed to the ideals of fairness, freedom of expression, openness and accountability; is required to be representative of a broad cross-section of the population of the country; and must possess the relevant qualifications, expertise and experience.

Langa`s replacement will be elected from within the ICASA council, which is why the regulator is seeking a new councillor, rather than advertising the chairman`s post.
