The colloquium on pricing in the telecommunications industry begins tomorrow.

The event, hosted by the Department of Communications, takes place at Gallagher Estate in Midrand. Stakeholders from both the public and private sectors are expected to participate in the two-day colloquium.

According to the department, it is important "to interrogate the challenge of reduction of the cost of doing business especially in the information and communications technology sector".

Communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri`s opening speech, as well as a presentation on global developments in telecommunications pricing, by Taylor Reynolds of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, will give context to this issue.

Tracy Cohen of the Independent Communications Authority of SA will discuss the South African regulatory framework, while BMI-TechKnowledge will present a research paper on the state of South African telecommunications pricing.

The Communications Users Association of SA will present the consumer perspective on telecommunications pricing.

Breakaway sessions, which are expected to flow into Friday, will cover policy and regulatory framework, affordable broadband and affordable universal access.
