MTN customers will soon be able to migrate between MTN network service providers while keeping their current number, as a first step towards mobile number portability (MNP).

MTN COO Buckley McGrath said at the opening of MTN`s newest service centre at Protea Gardens Shopping Centre in Soweto yesterday that MNP would ultimately allow mobile phone subscribers to retain their mobile number while switching between mobile network operators and service providers.

However, a date for implementation of MNP has not yet been announced. The Independent Communications Authority of SA has published draft MNP regulations for public comment and the final regulations should be promulgated soon.

McGrath said that in the meantime MTN had decided to opt for service provider migration. This means MTN subscribers will soon be able to switch between service providers on the MTN network and keep their numbers.
