Value-added network service (VANS) licences are available for collection at the Independent Communications Authority of SA`s (ICASA`s) offices in Johannesburg.

A statement issued late last week by the regulator says the new VANS licences will be available from its offices in Katherine Street, Sandton, for collection until Friday, 2 September, after which they will be posted to applicants.

An ICASA staff member told ITWeb that there were more than 200 licences ready and that many had been collected.

The new licences are being issued following the fuss generated earlier this year by the minister of communications Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, who issued a press release saying it was not her intention that VANS be allowed to self-provision.

ICASA`s latest terms and conditions seem to leave the door to self-regulation open, although the VANS themselves have mixed views.
