The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) call centre is ready to cope with the rush once voter registration for municipal elections gets under way tomorrow.

IEC communications manager Sibongiseni Dlamini says the call centre will provide South Africans with the necessary information, such as where to register, whether they have already registered, or any other related queries.

"This call centre will assist the IEC to achieve and maintain a professional, cost-effective level of service that meets the needs and expectations of the public it serves," says Dlamini.

The call centre`s VoiceXML interactive voice response platform provided by DigitalMall gives voters the option of receiving voters` roll confirmation without human intervention, or speaking to a call centre agent, depending on the nature of the enquiry.

DigitalMall CEO Yaron Assabi says the contact centre is already in operation, with 180 staff members on board - some of them provided by Emmanuels Advance and some of them graduates from CIDA City Campus.

"It is a great opportunity to create jobs and serve our country at the same time. Depending on the number of calls made per day we have up to 80 operators per shift, and by the end of the elections we expect about a million calls answered," says Assabi.

The IEC call centre can be reached at toll-free number 0800 11 8000.
