iBurst drops modem prices

iBurst has reduced the price of modems and antennae, and scrapped connection fees on monthly and 24-month contracts, with immediate effect. The fixed wireless Internet service provider says price reductions will vary from 13% to 22%.

Rudolph Muller, founder of MyADSL, says while the price reduction will make it slightly easier for somebody to purchase a modem, true price reductions need to take place in the month-to-month charges.

"The monthly cost of broadband remains much too high for a large portion of the population," he says.

Thami Mtshali, CEO of iBurst, says iBurst appeals to home and office users who want a broadband modem delivered within 24 hours and a set-up time of less than 30 minutes. He says mobile broadband is becoming the technology of choice for small businesses that can`t afford to wait months for an Internet connection.

Tebogo Khaas, chairman of the SMME Forum, says the price cuts are a welcome relief for small business owners.

"We look forward to a day when people don`t have to pay for a modem and simply pay for data usage," he says.

However, a more pressing issue iBurst should address is ensuring a more robust network, he says. Khaas notes there are areas where SMME Forum members struggle to connect because signals are weak.
