Altech Autopage Cellular, in partnership with Allied Mobile and EMI Music, has developed a memory card that comes preloaded with an album of music and delivers CD-quality music to mobile phones, without using other digital technology.

The preloaded memory card can be inserted into 40 different handset types, and music is channelled through the internal speaker or earphones, Autopage said.

Although music memory cards are not a new concept, they require additional technology such as a PC or broadband Internet connectivity for download and transfer purposes.

"The music memory card has bridged the gap between CD players and MP3 players," claimed Autopage MD Stephen Blewett at the announcement in Rosebank yesterday.

Allied Mobile`s director Jacqueline Courtney said the tripartite alliance had been formed in response to the demand for music in the mobile mass market.

"Autopage come up with the concept, EMI Music contributed the content, and Allied Mobile brought the technological experience to compress an album on a 128MB memory card," said Courtney.

Autopage is introducing the music memory card, priced similarly to CDs, to the local market by bundling it with an MTN MyCall 100 airtime package and a Samsung D820 handset. The memory card will be preloaded with one of three albums, two by Robbie Williams and one by Steve Hofmeyer.

"Delivering content to our mobile communications is the first step in Autopage`s triple play strategy to close the loop between voice, data and content," said Blewett.
