SingTel offers wireless VOIP on Nokias

Nokia and SingTel are working together to combine cellular and VOIP communication services in Singapore, by integrating dual-mode wireless technology with Nokia E60, E61 and N80 Internet Edition handsets.

Teleclick reports the phones are capable of switching between 2G, 3G and wireless LAN networks, offering access to SingTel`s SIP-based VOIP when inside a WiFi hotspot.

"Consumers can now experience the power of mobility and benefit from accessing Internet services and calls without being connected to a computer," says Chris Carr, Nokia`s GM of customer market operations.

Toyota cuts costs with VOIP

Australia`s Toyota Material Handling (TMH) has cut telco costs by replacing a 10-year-old PABX system with VOIP and leveraging its existing WAN, writes the Australian ComputerWorld.

"[The deployment] follows a year-long search to find an alternative to its $14 000 worth of ISDN inter-office line charges and thousands of phone calls placed between sites," adds the article.

The 100-user VOIP system TMH selected connects its main Adelaide office with two Melbourne sites and mobile staff, and also allows existing analogue handsets to operate, which is necessary to communicate with financial institutions.

UK`s first WiFi VOIP carriers emerge

Mobiboo has launched what is believed to be the UK`s first WiFi-based mobile VOIP service, with UK SMS specialist aql barely hours later introducing its own competing version of such a service.

This is according to TelecomWeb, which adds that both services will only work within range of an accessible WiFi hotspot or router.

"Mobiboo has stolen a march on most of the industry by signing a pact with European hotspot giant The Cloud, which boasts 1 092 hotspots scattered across the UK," states the article.
