Copper theft hammers Namibian telco

Fixed-line operator Namibia Telecom is working closely with the Namibian police in a bid to stop the rampant copper wire theft that is costing the telecommunications company thousands.

The company has lost close to US$105 300 to copper wire vandalism and theft since the beginning of this year, says Oiva Angula, senior manager of corporate communications and public relations at Namibia Telecom.

"We are in close liaison with police to stop this copper wire theft and vandalism," says Angula.

The company has recorded 26 incidents of theft and vandalism in the capital of Windhoek and other main areas like Swakopmund, he says. The International Airport, in Windhoek, has continually been affected, which has caused huge problems, he adds.

Angula says the vandalism and theft of the copper wire causes loss of telecommunication transmission for hours at a time. "The Namibian economy is taking strain from such long periods of time without landline communications."

He emphasises the difficulty of trying to run a business under such circumstances and encourages the Namibian public to report any copper wire theft or vandalism to the police.
