Telkom named 'loser of the year'

Johannesburg, 27 Nov 2006

Broadband users voted Telkom the "loser of the year", at the 2006 People's Awards, which formed part of the annual MyADSL Broadband Conference, on Friday.

The prize, a 33.6Kbps modem, went to an organisation or individual who was the biggest hindrance to development in the local broadband arena over the last year, said MyADSL founder Rudolph Muller.

The awards attracted nearly 1 000 online votes from broadband consumers, he said.

Muller added that the Independent Communications Authority of SA, its chairman Paris Mashile and communications minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri were also nominated and received their fair share of votes.

iBurst was voted "broadband provider of the year", edging out Vodacom by a small margin, while Web Africa was voted "ADSL ISP of the year", also narrowly beating OpenWeb.

Participants at the conference also took issue with the fact that Telkom regularly stated it strives to be customer-centric, yet failed to participate in the event which would help it connect with forum members.

Conference speakers included representatives from Vodacom, DataPro, iBurst, Sentech, Neotel, MTN, Neology and the Institute of Technology, Strategy and Innovation.

Vodacom and DataPro sponsored the event.
