Cell C claims it is winning the mobile number portability (MNP) game. However, the victory may be hollow, as only a small number of mobile phone subscribers are reported to be taking advantage of the facility to port to another network operator while keeping their numbers.

In a media statement, the third cellular operator says the Cell C network (including Virgin Mobile) is the only net gainer in the MNP game, capturing about 40% of all ports that took place since MNP was implemented in November. The operator adds it has only lost 13% of all ports in the same period.

Although ITWeb was unable to access the latest statistics from the Number Portability Company and all the operators, a Business Day report indicates only 23 000 users have ported since MNP was implemented.

"Movement with number portability has been minimal and has had no impact on the Vodacom network," says Vodacom chief communications officer Dot Field.

MTN media relations manager Ravin Maharaj insists it is too early to tell whether MNP is having an impact on the operator. He says the process should be given time before an evaluation exercise is undertaken.

Cell C head of corporate communications Vanashree Pillay concedes the company always expected the introduction of MNP to be gradual.

"MNP is a not a big bang, once-off activity. We have always believed MNP is a journey and not a race," says Pillay.

"People have been locked into contracts or have been attached to their numbers. What MNP requires is a behavioural change and, with time, we believe more consumers will see the value of the option they have in being able to choose."

Nonetheless, Cell C says the numbers are encouraging, as they prove consumers are seeking the best overall value for money and service offering.
