Samsung, Altech sign WiMax deal

JSE-listed telecommunications group Altech has signed an agreement with multinational electronics company Samsung to deploy a test WiMax network.

A source close to the deal, who cannot be named, confirms the agreement was wrapped up "very recently", and will see Samsung deploy a "test WiMax network" in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.

ITWeb understands discussions between the companies have been in progress for many months.

Officially, the announcement of the agreement must still be mediated by Samsung's head office in Korea, notes the source.

Altech CTO Steve Sidley declined to give details on the partnership this morning, saying only: "Altech has publicly stated its aspirations to play aggressively in the broadband wireless arena, but we have no comment on initiatives currently being pursued."

He adds that official comment on any specific partnerships will be released in due course.

Details on the scale of the project and when the network will be rolled out are not yet known.

In October, Altech said it was examining the possibility of bringing an international broadband solution to SA. Altron, the majority stakeholder in Altech, has gone on record as saying it would be a greenfield development.
