PDAs function as VOIP phones

Fringland free mobile VOIP software is now available for Windows Mobile 5 and Windows Mobile 6 devices. The software allows users to make free VOIP phone calls and conduct multiple live chat sessions through Skype, Google Talk and MSN Messenger, reports Windows For Devices.

Fringland says its mobile VOIP client enables "WiFi-enabled but SIM-less" Windows Mobile PDAs to function as open VOIP phones, using either WiFi hot spots or 3G cellular data services for access to the Internet.

It also supports making low-cost VOIP calls to PSTN/POTS landline phones using SkypeOut or similar services.

Retail giant resells VOIP

VOIP provider Freshtel Holdings has signed a letter of intent to offer its whitelabel service with mobile phone vendor Effortel, to enable mobile calls over the Internet, reports Computerworld

The service will also allow retail giant Carrefour to operate its own re-branded virtual cellular network, which it has already deployed in its Belgium and Italy stores.

The acting CEO of ASX-listed Freshtel Holdings, Peter Warner, said the letter is the first step for its future collaboration plans with the mobile vendor.

VOIP users ditch headsets

Jajah, a Web-based VOIP firm, has asked Internet users to show them the most creative way in which VOIP microphone headsets can be destroyed, reports Telappliant.

The competition was launched in order to highlight the fact that VOIP users do not have to be tied to their computer, but can make calls from normal fixed lines or mobile phones.

The firm said its intention "is to point out the benefits of using Jajah as a communication tool for free and low-cost global calling, without any headset involved", and to "share and create fun and creative content" for users of the service.
