Only six of 29 candidates nominated for the vacant Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) councillor position cut the mustard for Parliament's communications committee.

During a short debate yesterday, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications unanimously selected the following candidates for public interviews: Refiloe Msiza, Soraya Booley, Mbulelo Kibido, Norman Boloyi, Thembikile Ndlovu and Selby Mampuru.

"The numbers to be interviewed is dictated by what is available and I see very few who really qualify," said Dene Smuts, Democratic Alliance MP.

Suzanne Vos, of the Inkatha Freedom Party, and several of the African National Congress MPs echoed Smuts' sentiments.

ICASA is supposed to have nine councillors, with one position becoming vacant after Mamadupio Mohlala resigned earlier this year in order to take up a position as the pension funds adjudicator.

The candidates will be invited for public interviews in October once Parliament returns from a short recess.
