Telkom hosts 11th Satnac

Telkom will host the seventh annual Southern Africa Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (Satnac) from 7 to 10 September at the Wild Coast Sun, in the Eastern Cape.

"Satnac allows industry leaders, academia and operators to present and debate strategic direction in the ICT sector and also affords a platform for postgraduate students to showcase their applied research," says Telkom's group executive Marius Mostert.

"With so many industry leaders attending Satnac, the conference is also an excellent networking platform for the telecoms industry."

Mostert explains that the conference will intensely debate all those aspects that enable telcos to deliver any communication services, anywhere, any time.

More than 330 people from 25 countries worldwide have already confirmed their attendance at Satnac 2008. Mostert explains that one-third of the registered delegates are non-South African attendees, with 69 of them being students from African countries such as Zimbabwe, Kenya, Nigeria, Lesotho, Swaziland, Ghana, Iran, Angola, Pakistan, Mozambique, Zambia, and Uganda, who are studying in SA.

Mostert says 80 research papers, carefully scrutinised and selected by senior academics at Telkom Centres of Excellence (COEs), will be presented by students from around the world.

Telkom's COE programme is closely linked to the conference and was established 11 years ago, with focus on building advanced research capabilities at institutions of higher education.

To date, 16 COEs function across the country at all leading universities.

The centres are jointly funded by Telkom, 27 industry partners and the Department of Trade and Industry.
