Wavecom introduces new 3G GSM and CDMA solutions for wireless alarm, automotive and tracking

Customers can now choose GSM/GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA or CDMA 2000 1x - all in a common form factor.

Issy les Moulineaux (France), 30 Sep 2008

Wavecom today introduced two new members of its sleek Q26 Series Wireless CPU family. The new Q26 Extreme offers dual-mode 2G and 3G to enable data-intensive applications like real-time video streaming for the security or automotive industries.

In addition, the new Q26 Elite offers CDMA 2000 1x wireless voice and data connectivity in the same form-factor, so customers can design their application once and connect using any cellular protocol, anywhere around the world.

The new products are also footprint compatible with the existing popular Q2686 and Q2687 Classic (GSM/GPRS) and Q2687 (EDGE) Wireless CPU devices in order to smooth product development and simplify the process of upgrading.

The 3G Q26 Extreme is equipped with antenna diversity and runs at peak data rates up to 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA with automated 2G/3G handover. It supports quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE on the 850, 900, 1800, 1 900MHz bands and tri-band HSPA on the 850, 1900, 2 100MHz bands for global network compatibility.

It can be used as a smart wireless modem, connecting to back-end IT systems securely; as a cooperative processor, sharing the system load of the final product with a host processor; or, for the ultimate in efficiency and cost-effectiveness, it provides customers with the option to embed their application directly on the device's integrated ARM9 32-bit processor, capable of executing 88 million instructions per second. This is possible thanks to Open AT, an M2M-optimised cellular wireless software suite which allows customers to embed their C and/or Lua application directly on the device to save development time and the expense of an external processor.

In addition, external or embedded applications written for Q2686 or Q2687 Wireless CPU devices are fully portable, without additional software coding, to the new Q26 Extreme thanks to the smart operating system.

To support the unique needs of automotive, finance and security customers, the Q26 Extreme is available with inSIM, the Wavecom integrated Subscriber Identity Module, for enhanced durability in extreme environmental conditions. It also comes with unique Open AT Plug-Ins designed to make integrating best-in-class security and GPS technology simple. If the customer prefers, the Wavecom Q26 Extreme can also interface with Microsoft Windows CE.

To further reduce total cost of ownership, the new Q26 Extreme supports the unique, secure Wavecom Intelligent Device Service offer, providing customers with access to the world's most powerful Web-based service platform for upgrading and monitoring networked products - a critical factor in maintaining functionality through ongoing network changes.

The second new product, Q26 Elite, features up-to-date CDMA technology and supports GPS, making it uniquely suited for fleet management and tracking applications with E911 requirements. In addition, it provides customers using CDMA an opportunity to upgrade as new technology becomes available. Both Q26 Elite and Q26 Extreme are automotive grade products, meeting some of the toughest quality requirements in the industry.

"We have seen from the success of our Q24 Series products just how important GSM/CDMA form-factor compatibility is to our customers," said Philippe Guillemette, Wavecom Chief Technology Officer. "It is something we have offered in that series for six years, and which we are pleased now to be able to provide in a smaller package and one that includes GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA2000 1x, HSDPA and HSUPA for customers as and when they need it."
