Sprint losses continue

Despite seeing a surge in prepaid wireless subscribers last quarter, Sprint continued to haemorrhage money and posted a net loss of $594 million, according to PCWorld.

Sprint's earnings represented an 18% decline from the $505 million loss the company posted in the first quarter of 2008.

Over the past year the company has seen a steady drop in its quarterly revenues, as its $8.2 billion in first quarter 2009 operating revenues marked a 12% decrease from the $9.3 billion in operating revenues it generated in the first quarter of 2008.

Wireless HD video gets boost

Technology titans have announced an alliance to promote a Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) standard predicted to one day let people beam high-definition video to home television sets, reports AFP.

WiGig is 10 to 20 times faster than WiFi, and should cut from hours to seconds the time it takes to wirelessly transfer gigantic digital data files, such as HD films, according to alliance president Ari Sadri.

WiGig uses a 60GHz spectrum to quickly move large amounts of data, meaning that several people could use wireless Internet connections simultaneously for demanding tasks without slowing performance.

Possible Apple 3G laptops

Apple may be planning to add 3G wireless broadband capabilities to all or part of its laptop line - including possibly the oft-rumoured tablet Mac, reports The Register.

The evidence supporting this rumour is tenuous at best - although intriguing.

A Computerworld blogger spotted a posting on Apple's Job Opportunities site for a communications QA engineer, where the position's requirements include "in-depth knowledge of one or more Comms technologies.
