Gateway connects Nigeria network

Gateway Communications, a provider of communications services to mobile operators and multinational corporations in Africa, has been awarded a contract to provide Etisalat with cellular backhaul for its Nigerian mobile network, states Business Day.

The deal, worth $6 million over a two-year term, ensures satellite cellular backhaul from Gateway Communications to Etisalat, which would connect three major cities in Nigeria.

Commenting on the business relationship between the two companies, Steven Evans, CEO of Etisalat Nigeria, remarked: “Given the rapid rate of mobile adoption in Nigeria and what this represents in terms of opportunity, Nigeria is undoubtedly a key market for Etisalat.”

Lower spectrum rates create catch-22

Leading GSM operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular are confronted with a catch-22 situation, with the Indian department of telecom set to announce a reduction in spectrum usage charges to a uniform 3% of telcos' annual revenues, reports Economic Times.

But, only those GSM operators who agree to pay a one-time fee for all excess radio frequencies they hold beyond the 6.2MHz mark will be eligible for this reduction.

According to the current policy, all telcos share 2% to 6% of their annual revenues with the government as a fee for using the radio frequencies allotted to them.

Oyster closes, owes EUR10 million

Creditors have been left nursing debts of more than EUR10 million following the collapse of Oyster Telecom, which operated a chain of more than 20 phone stores around the country, writes Sunday Business Post.

Cellular Services, the holding company behind Oyster, went into liquidation last Friday, four months after it lost its main contract with Vodafone.

The Cellular Services group was controlled by entrepreneur Emmet Memery. Kieran Wallace, a corporate restructuring partner with KPMG in Dublin, was appointed liquidator to Cellular Services, and will now attempt to dispose of the company's assets.
