Mobile computing gets innovative

Intel has struck a long-term deal with Nokia to develop Intel architecture-based mobile computing devices, says Hardware Zone.

In addition, Intel and Nokia are developing open source mobile Linux software projects. Intel will also acquire a Nokia HSPA/3G modem IP licence for use in future products.

Anand Chandrasekher, Intel senior vice-president, says: "This Intel and Nokia collaboration unites and focuses many of the brightest computing and communications minds in the world, and will ultimately deliver open and standards-based technologies, which history shows drive rapid innovation, adoption and consumer choice.”

Smartphone sales to escalate

Research firm Parks Associates reveals that annual global sales of smartphones will grow from 131 million units in 2008 to more than 300 million by 2013, according to TMCnet.

The report, entitled 'Mobile services: global outlook', found consumers are attracted to converged devices because they combine media-rich applications into a mobile platform.

The report predicts the number of smartphone users throughout the world will exceed 1.1 billion in 2013. This will create a market for mobile carriers and mobile application developers.

Samsung adds music search app

Samsung is set to embed Midomi music search and ID application into its multimedia phones on the Windows Mobile platform, reports Earth Times.

Midomi music search enables users to identify music by holding the phone to a speaker as well as singing or humming in snippets just a few seconds long. In addition, Midomi integrates with wireless carriers' music stores so users can purchase the music they discover.

The models enabled with Midomi and running on Windows Mobile 6.1 include Samsung Omnia and Samsung GT-C6620. Additional handsets will be supported in the near future.
